do things right, do the right things

“Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.”
이것은 드러커가 한 말이라고 한다.
그런데 비슷비슷한 얘기를 여러번 들은 것 같아 찾아보니, 최초에 한 말인지는 명확하지 않다.

“Managers do things right. Leaders do the right thing.”

이것은 베니스라는 사람이 한 말이라고 한다.
do the right thing은 본 적은 없어도 영화제목이기도 하다.

전에는 멋진 말은 전부 다 마크 트웨인이 했나보다 그랬는데, 독창적인지는 몰라도 피터 드러커도 평생 멋진 말만 골라 한 듯하다.

한마디 한마디가 주옥같다.
누군가 어떤 분야에서든 리더가 되고 싶으면 숙고할 가치가 있다.
나는 그런 것과 관련이 없으니 참으로 다행이다.
